What is “The Luminous Hand?”
Well, consider any of these explanations:
1. It’s the childlike creativity and imagination one needs to draw, paint, make a film, tell a story.
2. It’s an artist’s response to Adam Smith’s “Invisible Hand.” In other words, self-interest is a bankrupt position for the artist-citizen. Engagement with society and its problems must occur on some level — although, like beauty, the “political” aspect of an artwork is often in the beholder’s eye.
3. It’s a subtle suggestion that 21st-century culture (and 21st-century America) must stay connected to a handmade sensibility.
